The 3rd Annual Sisters in the Brotherhood Recruitment Initiative Open House brought out key labor leaders, and state policy makers to review the progress of the organization, which works to recruit more women into the Carpenters Union.
On May 11, 2016, the Northeast Regional Council of Carpenters (NRCC) and the Sisters in the Brotherhood committee held the 3rd Annual Recruitment Initiative Open House at the training center in Kenilworth, New Jersey. It was attended by approximately 70 people, including many from community-based organizations, educational institutions and state agencies.
There were several guest speakers which included
- State Senator Nellie Pou
- John Ballantyne Executive Secretary-Treasurer, NRCC
- Jack Kocsis, Jr. Chief Executive Officer, Associated Construction Contractors of New Jersey
- Al Daloisio, Jr. President, Railroad Construction Company Inc.
Attendees received updates about the Council’s many successes involving the recruitment of women. They also learned about the recruitment initiative and ways to become involved. Highlighted at the open house was the first pre-apprenticeship program for women in New Jersey. This pre-apprenticeship is in its second week with 15 women in attendance. Following the speeches the Sisters gave tours of the facility and then they engaged in a Q&A session. All in all this event was a huge success not only for the Sisters initiative but for future partnerships with local and state agencies.
