Lawson’s Lake Summer Camp Reconstruction

Lawson’s Lake Summer Camp Reconstruction

In 2013 the Boys and Girls Club of Albany were forced to cancel its annual summer camp at Lawson’s Lake N.Y. due to financial issues, leaving countless disadvantaged youths from Albany County with nowhere to go but out on the streets during their summer vacation from school.

In 2013 the Boys and Girls Club of Albany were forced to cancel its annual summer camp at Lawson’s Lake N.Y. due to financial issues, leaving countless disadvantaged youths from Albany County with nowhere to go but out on the streets during their summer vacation from school. Albany County Executive Dan McCoy and Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple, along with Albany County D.A. David Soares, approached us and asked if we could help with rebuilding some of the run down structures on site. Local #291 members and Representatives did just that. The project was headed up by Brian McCoy with the Sheriff’s Department along with Council Representative James Standhart and Council Representative Peter McAnearney. Over the course of 2 months they, along with our members were able to transform some of the dilapidated structures into functional, safe cabins, lodges and common areas for the children and counselors to use. With the help of Brothers John Smetana, Gary Hammond Jr., Todd Strazzeri, Chris Aviza, Walter Urzan, Kyle Martineau, Chris LaGray and Clark Boettner we were able to sheetrock, tape, install doors and cabinets and other miscellaneous tasks with plenty of time to spare before the camp was to be used. Congratulations and Thank you to all of our members that helped make not only the project a success, but the children’s summer as well.
