Norristown, PA (June 26, 2017) – On May 27, six members of the Northeast Regional Council of Carpenters (NRCC) Local 167 volunteered at the George Washington Carver Community Center (GWCCC) located at 249 Jacoby Street in Norristown, PA. The center, which serves the underserved community in Norristown, was in need of repairs and the Carpenters Union stepped in and helped to make much needed repairs to the building.
Members of Local 167 worked on replacing GWCCC’s ceiling in a number of rooms including the women’s rest room, men’s rest room, and the gym. A local contractor, Ceilings Inc., donated the carpentry materials, while six members of Local 167 donated their time and skills. Local 167 heard of the volunteer opportunity and wanted to stand by a part of the NRCC’s mission, which is giving back to the community and helping those in need.
“Coming together for the community as Brothers and Sisters makes me proud to be a Union Carpenter, especially when we do charitable work such as this,” said Dave Gannon, Team Lead of Local 167 in Allentown, PA. “I’m glad that we were able to provide our skills in carpentry to such a deserving community organization that helps enrich the lives of others.”
Pennsylvania State Senator Daylin Leach helped secure funding for the project that helped benefit the community of Norristown.
“The George Washington Carver Community Center has been a vital part of the Norristown community for many years, so I was eager to play a small part in keeping it running,” said State Senator Leach. “I applaud the efforts of everyone who worked on it, including the carpenters, who donated resources and countless hours of work to ensure the Carver Center will be open for many years to come.”
Pennsylvania State Representative Matt Bradford also helped secure funding for the project.
“The generosity of the Carpenters was a real force multiplier to the benefit of the Norristown Community,” said State Representative Bradford. “Coupled with the funds, my office was able to appropriate from the Commonwealth, and the Carpenters gift of labor and skill will have a lasting impact for the children and residents utilizing the George Washington Carver Community Center. On behalf of the entire Community, we cannot thank the Carpenters enough for their support."
