Mercer County Freeholder Anthony Verrelli is running to replace former Assemblywoman Liz Muoio, whom Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy has tapped to be state treasurer.
Verrelli announced his long-expected candidacy this morning.
“I am pleased and honored to announce my candidacy to fill the vacancy of the 15th Legislative District Assembly seat, which had recently been vacated by Democratic Assemblywoman Liz Muoio,” Verrelli said in a press release. “If elected, I will look to extend Liz’s legacy of being a strong Democratic voice in the State House and in making sure Mercer and Hunterdon [counties] are well represented. I am ready to build on my success at the Mercer County Board of Chosen Freeholder to make sure Mercer County and Hunterdon County continue to be prominently featured in statewide conversations, so our voice is heard. If elected, I will be a fierce advocate.”
Verrelli is president of Northeast Regional Council of Carpenters Local 254.
Democratic committee members from the district’s towns in Mercer and Hunterdon will select an interim replacement for Muoio to serve until a special election is held in November.
There is a long list of other potential candidates for the seat, though Verrelli is considered one of the favorites.
