Long way to go to educate New Jersey voters about the benefits of North Jersey gaming expansion
EDISON, N.J. – The Northeast Regional Council of Carpenters is applauding New Jersey's legislative leaders for coming together in order to finalize a
gaming-expansion bill and let voters decide whether to expand casinos to North Jersey.
"We congratulate Senate President Stephen Sweeney for his leadership and spirit of compromise in working with Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto and other legislative leaders to craft the final bill," said John Ballantyne, Executive-Secretary Treasurer of the NRCC. “This is a proposal that is focused on creating opportunities for all of New Jersey citizens.”
Ballantyne said he was especially proud of the carpenters, who remained disciplined in their support for the legislation.
“Our members have taken a leadership role by going to the legislature to show support for this bill. They educated themselves on the details and then mobilized their collective voices to ensure this legislation can do what it intends: create thousands of good paying jobs. They worked closely with our Building Trades Council partners to demonstrate great grassroots support,” he added.
"If you give a carpenter an issue or a problem, we’ll solve it. Our members jumped in and showed that we’re not just fair weather friends when it comes to the critical issues affecting our state. That’s the essence of what being a Citizen Carpenter is all about."
